Find More About The Image Book
The Image Book (French: Le Livre d'image) is a 2018 Swiss avant-garde essay film directed by Jean-Luc Godard.

The Image Book (Le livre d'image) Critics Consensus Potentially insurmountable for viewers not attuned to the director's wavelength, The Image Book is typically confounding - and ultimately ...

In some cases, it is to reflect on the metaphysical properties of the world — time, and space, and where meaning is found — but more importantly it is the image, the thing that has obsessed Godard for his entire career, that anchors this film. His ontological enquiry into the image continues to be one of the most moving in history.

Like much of Godard’s recent work, The Image Book is a rumination on art, politics, history, and mankind’s eternal folly disguised as a cinematic collage. It’s plotless but it has shape; random but with purpose.

His latest work "The Image Book" starts with a closeup of a hand pointing a finger upward, followed by closeups of text shown on an old-fashioned video display terminal, then a pair of hands cutting film on a 20th century Steenbeck editing table, and two more pairs of hands writing words on paper.

Winner of the first Special Palme d'Or to be awarded in the history of the Cannes Film Festival, The Image Book is another extraordinary addition to the French master's vast filmography.

“The Image Book” implies a disturbing connection between the industrialization of killing and the mass production of moving pictures. Depictions of combat and slaughter, excised from narrative or...

THE IMAGE by Daniel Boorstin is a seminal work on the popular culture in America. Though first published in 1969, it is as relevant today as it was then; perhaps more so given the clarity and vantage point of time and experience. In the fall of 1975, this book was required reading in my freshman college Eng 101 class.

Godard lost none of his edge as a filmmaker, for better and for worse, and "The Image Book" proves he's retained his ability to shock and inspire audiences. The editing and voiceover are precise and hyperaware, with more wit and levity than "Goodbye to Language" brought, and the references are deeper-cut as well.
